Peter Katz is an executive managing director of Institutional Property Advisors (IPA). Mr. Katz joined Marcus & Millichap in 1991, specializing in institutional and value-add sales of multifamily properties in the Southwest and in student housing nationwide. He is one of IPA’s first advisors. Mr. Katz has also been involved in joint venture development equity initiatives in a consulting capacity for core Class A properties throughout the country and has closed transactions in more than 27 states. Mr. Katz was promoted to vice president investments in 1999 and was elected to senior vice president investments in 2008. He became an executive director of IPA in 2012.

During his 22-year career in commercial real estate sales, Mr. Katz has closed over $5 billion in multifamily and student housing transactions. He consistently ranks among the firm’s top investment specialists. Mr. Katz has earned numerous awards during his tenure including the prestigious Circle of Excellence, Chairman’s Club, and National Achievement awards. He has been awarded the firm’s Top 10 earner award multiple times. Mr. Katz is one of the top 10 all-time earning agents in the firm’s 42-year history.

Mr. Katz has represented numerous institutional market-rate clients such as Equity Residential, GE Capital, Archstone, AEW Capital Management, SunAmerica, California State Teachers Retirement System, Boston Capital, Waterton Associates LLC, RREEF, Clarion Partners, Fairfield Residential, Associated Estates, Wood Partners, KeyBank and many others. He has represented institutional clients and developers in the student housing sector, including American Campus Communities Inc., EdR Collegiate Housing, Harrison Street Real Estate Capital, Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors L.P., Blue Vista Capital Partners, Inland American, Landmark Properties, Residential Housing, Trinitas Ventures and Fidelity Real Estate Group/Long Wharf Real Estate Partners. Mr. Katz has consistently been recognized by institutional owners for his detailed underwriting, extensive knowledge of submarkets and successful transactional representation. He has been acknowledged by the media as a Southwest market-rate apartment specialist and a national student housing expert.

Mr. Katz graduated from the American University Kogod School of Business in Washington, D.C. with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance. He also graduated from the IBM Executive Management Program. Mr. Katz worked with IBM for a decade on the Internal Revenue Service, Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigations teams in Washington, D.C. and on the American Express and Metropolitan Transportation Authority teams in New York City. 

Brian Abernethy

Brian Abernethy started his career with Institutional Property Advisors as an analyst in the Research Services division, and was promoted to National Publications Manager. For the past four years, Mr. Abernethy has worked for The Katz Group, and he is primarily responsible for the financial analysis of student housing and market rate properties across the nation. He also researches markets and provides detailed submarket analysis for clients.

Mr. Abernathy earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in real estate from San Diego State University.

Justin Britto assists with the development and distribution of all marketing materials on behalf of The Katz Group. He is also in charge of rent surveys, which involve identifying properties comparable to the subject property and obtaining all information necessary to complete a rent comparables report. Other duties include maintaining the group’s client contact database.

Mr. Britto earned a Bachelor of Science degree in real estate from Arizona State University.
